Drug Therapy for Children
When possible, pharma-cologic therapy is avoi-ded in children with restless legs syndrome. Physicians may suggest lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, appropriate sleep routi-nes, and diet adjust-ments (e.g., avoidance of any caffeine-contai-ning products). If these interventions are not effective, physicians may prescribe appropri-ately adjusted dosages of clonidine or carbido-pa/levodopa. In fact, in some children with RLS and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, such medications may effectively treat symp-toms of both disorders.
